All Movie Guide |
http://www.allmovie.com |
| |
News, reviews, discussions, theatre information and full production details on an extensive range of films, the site is most notable for its film synopses, which are longer and more detailed than those found on other sites. |
| |
BritMovie |
http://www.britmovie.co.uk |
| |
Another wonderful site full of interest and information. For British films, old and new, this is hard to beat. |
| |
CineStills |
http://www.cinestills.com |
| |
From France comes this charming, interesting site. You’ll find stills from behind the scenes as well as stills from French and world cinema. You can search by film, stars, director, producer, editor and many other film professionals. There is downloadable wallpaper and a small selection of ecards. Language – French and English |
| |
Classic British Cinema |
http://www.wickedlady.com |
| |
A personal look at classic British films. Still in development but some interesting pages on some of the leading actors, producers and directors of British films. |
| |
Classic Movie Favorites |
http://www.classicmoviefavorites.com |
| |
Another personal tribute to the classic films of early American cinema. The content is good, but a bit sparse, which is not surprising given the effort it takes to maintain such a site. |
| |
Film Freak Central |
http://filmfreakcentral.net |
| |
Another site for film reviews, DVD releases and books on film. The layout is overly busy and the main menu is hard to locate, and the site can be a bit frustrating but it does contain some serious reviews which have some intellectual content, even if you disagree with the content. It has reviews of the usual studio releases and many (some obscure) non-US films. The articles and interviews are a cut above the superficial ones which predominate. |
| |
Film Noir, Suspense and Classic Action Movies |
http://www.suspense-movies.com |
| |
There’s a lot of information contained here. There are articles on femme fatales, directors, actors and much more. The site needs updating and is not at all attractive but the content compensates for its lack of design aesthetics. |
| |
Future Movies |
http://www.futuremovies.co.uk |
| |
Simply designed and easy to navigate, the site offers reviews, previews, DVD releases, interviews, a general discussion forum and discussion forums for films reviewed. The reviews are well-informed and thoughtful. If you like the style and like to express your opinion, you’ll probably come back time and again. |
| |
The Golden Years |
http://www.thegoldenyears.org |
| |
Essentially an online reference library, the site is a great place to start if you want to research a particular film. For each film there is some basic production and cast information, followed by quite a good variety of sources for further information, whether it is other sites, books, articles or reviews, plus where to go for galleries of the film. The site badly needs a make-over, but don’t let that stop you from using it. |
| |
The Greatest Films |
http://www.filmsite.org |
| |
Not to be missed. The site is a wonderful reference for film. Try not to be put off by the design - which is not at all attractive - and the annoying pop-ups, and enjoy the wealth of information on the site. With film reference links, lists such as the Greatest Films, Top Films, Greatest Lines, Greatest Scenes, plus short and detailed synopses, it is an intelligent and invaluable source of film information. |
| |
The Midnight Palace |
http://www.midnightpalace.com |
| |
Dedicated to the classic film of early American cinema, the site has reviews, articles, interviews, news, radio and even features a film you can watch on-line. Well worth visiting. |
| |
Modern Times |
http://www.moderntimes.com |
| |
The name can be seen as something of an oxymoron as it is dedicated to the early years of cinema. Or perhaps it is a nod to Chaplin’s film of the same name. Regardless of why the name was chosen, this is an enjoyable, interesting site which tries (and generally succeeds) to combine serious articles about film and society, with unashamedly reverent articles on great stars and great films. It is a simple and attractive site which may look dull to those who like brassy flash animations and constant movement, but if you have an attention span longer than five seconds and like cinema’s early American classics, don’t miss it. There are filmographies, biographies, galleries and articles. |
| |
Shekhar Kapur |
http://www.shekharkapur.com |
| |
This is a personal site from one of India’s – and the world’s - most respected directors. Alongside information about his films, there is also poetry, short stories, philosophical musings and some light-hearted tales. There is much which reveals a great deal about his films. |
| |
Turner Classic Movies |
http://www.tcm.com |
| |
What’s on, what to buy, books, reviews, trailers, wallpaper… everything TCM. The articles are usually interesting but it is probably the best that can be said for the site, apart from schedule information. If you like chatting to other film and TCM fans, there is the official blog site, Movie Morlocks (www.moviemorlocks.com). |
| |
Upperstall |
http://www.upperstall.com |
| |
If you think Indian film is just the lavish and colourful Bollywood, this site will show you how wrong you are. There are informed, intelligent reviews of Indian cinema, biographies of Indian directors and actors and a chronology of Indian cinema. It does lapse occasionally into intellectual over-stimulation, but it is a quality film site, nonetheless. |
