Empire

http://www.empireonline.com

Published in the UK, Empire is a quality film magazine and the online version matches its printed counterpart. The site is a bit cluttered and a lot to take in all at once but at least it will keep you enjoyably busy.

Films in Review

http://www.filmsinreview.com

Nothing fancy, just film reviews and essays on films. Since 1909, it has been one of the most respected journals about film.

The Hollywood Reporter

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com

You can’t go past this site for informed industry news and views. It is a mine of information and has a comprehensive set of links to the important people and organisations in the industry.

Premiere

http://www.premiere.com/

The site feels a lot like the magazine, which is no bad thing. It’s an enjoyable, accessible site with intelligent (if, at times, somewhat populist) reviews and comment.

Senses of Cinema

http://www.sensesofcinema.com

Its own description tells it all: “an online journal devoted to the serious and eclectic discussion of cinema”. This is not a site for the faint-hearted. It’s erudite, often self-indulgently clever though pretentious, poorly presented and yet one to be bookmarked if you want to look beneath the surface of film and understand its psychology.

Sight and Sound

http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound

The magazine of the British Film Institute, but worthy of inclusion in its own right as it is a first class film magazine for those who are serious about film. It is not parochial, either, with good coverage of world film. There is a lot to enjoy here from articles, essays, industry insights and that staple of film debate among film goers of all types – lists of the best and worst in film.

Variety

http://www.variety.com

A film institution and definitely worth the price of admission. Box office data, industry news, jobs, reviews, music… the list is quite impressive, as is the content of the site. You can get what you can browsing the site or get more by subscribing. If you want to be informed, log on.
