Berlinale – the Berlin International Film Festival

http://www.berlinale.de

One of the top film festivals in the world. To win a Bear at Berlin is feather in the cap of any filmmaker. The site avoids hype and concentrates on the practicalities of the festival rather than glamour and self-promotion. Language – German and English

Brisbane International Film Festival

http://www.biff.com.au

A surprisingly rich site, with lots to interest the casual visitor as well as those who want a recap of the year’s festival. There are short films to download, essays, information on BIFF free screenings and of course, you can buy tickets online. What does seem to be missing is information for filmmakers who wish to submit films for the next festival.

Cannes Film Festival

http://www.festival-cannes.fr

It remains the most prestigious and discussed film festival in the world. The site is primarily about the festival and includes a comprehensive archive of past festivals, juries, prizes and Out-of-Competition films. It also has pages for those planning to go to Cannes and some useful tips and information. Language – French and English

London Film Festival

http://www.lff.org.uk

A very sophisticated and informative site. It has iPod content, trailers, previews, a retrospective, interviews, specialist sections for press, filmmakers and teachers, as well as a selected film from the BFI archives you can download. Even if you don’t plan to visit the festival, there is a lot here for anyone interested in film.

Los Angeles

http://www.lafilmfest.com

Disappointingly sparse site, though it has all you need to know to submit a film or the venues for the festival showings, including maps and directions. The archives go back for only the last few years.

Sundance

http://festival.sundance.org

For independent filmmakers, this is the festival. Although the site is mainly about the previous year’s festival, it contains information on attending, submitting films, interviews, short films and some merchandising. Check out the SPLINKS for links to creations by selected multi-media artists.

Sydney International Film Festival

http://www.sydneyfilmfestival.org

If you want to find out all about the last festival, or obtain information regarding submissions, the site has what you require. Once you enter the previous year’s page, there are podcasts, competition and awards summary and a calendar of the festival’s touring schedule.

Toronto

http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2006/home

A bright, vivid site that offers the visitor all one needs to know to about the previous festival and buying tickets for the next. There is not a lot of ancillary activities or material but there is information for the novice festival visitor.

Venice Film Festival ~ la Biennale

http://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema

The oldest of the world’s film festivals and still one of the most prestigious. The site is a sub-site of Venice’s la Biennale official site. There isn’t a lot of useful information if you are visiting the festival for the first time but you can buy tickets, shop, read about the festival’s history and browse through the gallery from the last festival. Language – Italian and English.
