20th Century Fox |
http://www.foxmovies.com |
| |
A neat, attractive site promoting Fox’s latest releases. It contains links to other Fox sites such as Fox Searchlight and FoxAtomic. If you want to know what’s in the theatres and what’s happening at Fox, check it out. |
| |
Cinecitta |
http://www.cinecitta.co |
| |
One of the largest production studios in Europe and where many of the great films of cinema were produced. The site has box office statistics, a children’s page, job opportunities, festival information, news, new releases and interviews with film stars, directors and other film professionals. It has a slightly chaotic feel and looks a bit old-fashioned but it is still a valuable resource for Italian film information. Language – Italian and English |
| |
DEFA (Deutsche Film Aktiengesellschaft) |
http://www.defa.de |
| |
Especially useful for those wishing to conduct film research, this is the site of Germany’s respected film making studios. It has extensive archive information, history and its current role in German film-making. Don’t go here to find out what’s new in cinemas. Language – German |
| |
Dharma Productions |
http://www3.dharma-production.com |
| |
It is interesting that a film industry famous for its colour and sound has noticeably less strident web sites. Everything you’d expect is here: information, clips, music, downloads, promotions, but the presentation is more functional than ostentatious. Good taste and aesthetics takes precedence over attention-seeking. Every bit as technologically advanced as any US or European site, its gentle approach provides relief from the frenetic marketing of many other sites. |
| |
Disney |
http://disney.go.com/disneypictures |
| |
Games, previews, forthcoming releases, downloads, WAP… everything you'd expect and very well presented. The site is easy to navigate, colourful and with an eye to attract everyone, from adolescents and teens to adults. There is a link to a Disney Mobile site which has ring tones, games and graphics. As with many of the other studio sites, there is notable absence of references to Disney’s archive and its wonderful classic animations and films. |
| |
Dreamworks |
http://www.dreamworks.com |
| |
Entry to both Dreamworks SKG and Dreamworks Pictures. As you’d expect, a slick, well-presented site. |
| |
Ealing Studios |
www.ealingstudios.co.uk |
| |
Not a particularly attractive site and in contrast with the US studio sites, it looks rather dowdy. Yet, it more than makes up for its rather drab appearance by its content. This is one site that doesn’t forget its past and reading through the History of the studio and some of the great films it has given the world, is fascinating. It is a site about film, not marketing and highly recommended to anyone who wishes to see beneath the surface glitter. |
| |
Filmax |
http://www.filmax.com |
| |
Spanish distribution and production company. The site contains previews and trailers of current releases, music, television and DVD information. It lacks the downloads and merchandising paraphernalia of its US counterparts and could use a lot more information on artists associated with Filmax. Language - Spanish |
| |
Gaumont |
http://www.gaumont.com |
| |
Now part of Sony, Gaumont is one of the world’s foremost film studios. Like its American counterparts, the site contains information on current releases and films in production. It also has links to Gaumont’s museum and the Gaumont-Pathe archives. |
| |
Mukta Arts |
http://www.muktaarts.com |
| |
Very simple, almost self-deprecating site which combines information about current releases and forthcoming productions, with downloads, music and information on Mukta’s production facilities. It also contains information on Whistling Woods, a film, television and media institute. At least the site has an archive of some of its films over the past 30 years. There you’ll find a synopsis, production details, screen savers, trivia and other items of interest. Language - English. |
| |
MGM |
http://www.mgm.com |
| |
After a while, the studio sites seem pretty much the same, and MGM’s is no exception. It is an attractive, easily navigated site with trailers, new releases, DVD releases, games and television information. Perhaps its most interesting aspect is its clip and stills download. Don’t expect to be able to download a clip immediately and use it as you please; there are multiple clearances, costs and the request has to be processed. And there are no clearances for use on your website as yet. |
| |
Miramax |
http://www.miramax.com |
| |
An exception to the rule for studio sites. It is simple and uncluttered, concentrating only on current releases and films in production. The distinct lack of glitz and hype is refreshing. |
| |
New Line Cinema |
http://www.newline.com |
| |
The usual information on new releases, DVDs, television and ghosts of theatres past – and, of course, things to buy. There is an on-line shop which naturally concentrates on merchandising related to current releases, and an auction where registered visitors can but memorabilia, primarily from current films. |
| |
Paramount |
http://www.paramount.com |
| |
Links to Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks, Paramount Vantage and Paramount Home Entertainment. The Paramount Pictures site has what you would expect: current and future releases, television, games and movies on-demand. |
| |
Pinewood Studios |
http://www.pinewoodgroup.com |
| |
Pinewood is not like the other studios. It is a working production facility, one of the largest and most advanced in the world and some of the greatest blockbusters of the last fifty years have been made here. There’s lots to discover even though the slant is noticeably to promote the studio. The tour of the production facilities and processes provides a wealth of information. There is information on film, television and commercials production, all of which keep Pinewood very busy. |
| |
Rajshri Productions |
http://www.rajshri.com |
| |
A good site that avoids going over the top with its hype. Watch films on-line (including the first Indian film to premiere on the internet), preview current releases, downloads clips and music, information on concerts and documentaries (well, one, at the time of this listing). The site has an interesting definition of Movie Trivia; rather than interesting bits of information and facts, it is a look behind the scenes of selected film and music videos. Language – English. |
| |
Sony/Columbia-TriStar |
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies |
| |
Information on new releases, links to some classic films (though they seem to have re-defined the term classics), mobile content, television, movie downloads.. it is all predictable. As with all the studio sites, the main value is in getting a sneak preview of films in theatres or those about to be released. The Kids Zone (whatever happened to punctuation?) offers a good assortment of games, wallpaper, screensavers and other goodies and is worth browsing. |
| |
Studio Babelsberg |
http://www.studiobabelsberg.com |
| |
The German Pinewood, though it existed before its UK counterpart. The site is a bit bland and doesn’t do justice to its role in creating some of the biggest and best films in cinema history – and today. Language – German and English |
| |
Suevia Films |
http://www.sueviafilms.com |
| |
Since its re-organisation in 1995, Suevia is principally a film and DVD distribution organisation. Distributing Spanish and foreign films and television. Yet, it had been one of the most important film production houses in Spain since 1947. The site is a commercial site rather than a film marketing and information site and very light on material of interest to the film fan, but it is hard to ignore it when talking of Spanish cinema. Language – Spanish (though there are a few pages in English) |
| |
Universal |
http://www.universalstudios.com |
| |
Films in production, films in cinemas, DVD, pay-per-view, television (NBC Universal) and of course, Universal resorts – everything you expect from Universal. |
| |
Yash Raj Films |
http://yashrajfilms.com |
| |
This is the marketing site for one of India’s most successful studios. Not much different from the US sites, it is bright, hip, technologically savvy and easy to navigate. There is information on current releases, downloads, an online store and news. There is also a link to the official studio site. |
| |
Yash Raj Studios |
http://www.yrfstudios.com |
| |
Largely a promotion for their new production facilities, the site is disappointing. The information is not particularly detailed nor excitingly presented. Rather than use the studio’s vast catalogue of film to enrich the tour of the studio, they have relied on text and a limited gallery of pretty unexciting photos of the studio. Language - English. |
